Dr. Schwartz began treating sex offenders in 1971and published her first journal article on the subject in 1972. In 1977, she pursued her interest in sexual abuse and received her Ph.D.in an interdisciplinary program that combined psychology and criminology. She has established and supervised treatment programs for sex offenders that were implemented by Correction Departments in the states of New Mexico, Washington, Massachusetts, New Jersey and Missouri. Additionally, she has done clinical supervision with juvenile sex offenders in Connecticut and Massachusetts. From 1985 to 1993, she was part of a six member team from the National Academy of Corrections that taught the basics of sex offender treatment to groups from over 40 states. As a consultant, she has offered technical assistance to 30 states (including 7 with civil commitment programs), as well as Canada, Israel and Australia. She has served as an expert witness in major lawsuits regarding quality of treatment, representing both sides.
Dr. Schwartz published extensively in this area. She has edited the four volume set, The Sex Offender (Civic Research Institute), which was designated as a "must read" by the American Psychiatric Association, as well as A Practitioner's Guide to Treating the Incarcerated Male Sex Offender, and A Handbook of Correctional Psychology. She is also the co-author of Facing the Shadow, a workbook for sex offenders.
Dr. Schwartz has personally evaluated and treated over 1,000 individuals convicted of sexual assault or diagnosed as sexually compulsive, including both genders, individuals with a variety of disabilities, juveniles and sexually reactive children.
