   Dr. Prentky was Chief Psychologist and Director of Research at the Massachusetts T reatment Center for Sexually Dangerous Persons from 1980 until 1993. He held faculty positions in the Department of Psychiatry at Boston University Medical School and the Department of Psychology at Brandeis University. In addition, he taught in the Graduate School of Criminal Justice at Northeastern University. In September, 1993, he assumed the position of Director of Clinical and Forensic Services at the Joseph J. Peters Institute in Philadelphia. The Institute is a private, non-profit psychiatric agency that provides services to the victims and perpetrators of sexual crimes. In addition to overseeing all forensic and clinical services, Dr. Prentky managed a grant-supported research program. In July, 1997, Dr. Prentky returned to the Massachusetts Treatment Center as Director of Assessment.

   Dr. Prentky has worked as a forensic psychologist for the past twenty years. He has either assessed or supervised the assessment of approximately 2,000 sexual offenders and paraphilics, primarily for the criminal justice system in the general areas of criminal competency and responsibility, civil competency, NGRI and GBMI evaluations, diminished capacity, and risk assessment. He has evaluated or supervised the evaluation of about 50 female sexual offenders, over 100 adolescent sexual offenders, and numerous "impaired professionals" [individuals who exploit positions of power and authority to sexually abuse children and subordinates. Dr. Prentky has testified in state and federal court on about 200 cases.

   Dr. Prentky has been the principal or co-principal investigator on 11 federal grants. He has served as an ad hoc reviewer for 17 journals and is on the editorial board of three of them. He chaired a New York Academy of Sciences Conference on Human Sexual Aggression 1988), the scientific program for the Annual meeting of the Association for the Treatment of Sexual Abusers (ATSA) and guest edited an issue of Criminal Justice and Behavior on the assessment and treatment of sexual offenders (1994). In 1997, Safer Society published a workbook by Prentky and Edmunds on Assessing Sexual Abuse, and in 2000 Plenum will publish a book by Prentky and Burgess on Forensic Management of Sexual Offenders. In 1998, Dr. Prentky received the Significant Achievement Award from ATSA.
